Multiplication Fun

Last week we had one of our monthly paperless days.  For math students worked in pairs and practiced their multiplication facts. One way we practiced was on multiplication.com. This is a great resource for children struggling with multiplication. Another way we practiced was using math charts and multiplication manipulatives. We also played a game called "Boom". In this game students drew sticks out of an envelope and had to correctly answer the multiplication problem. If they get it right they keep the stick. If they drew a stick labeled boom they lost all of the sticks they had gained. Another game we played was multiplication cards. Using a standard deck of playing cards, students had to draw two cards and answer the multiplication fact. If students drew a face card that was a stopper and their turn ended. If students drew two face cards that was a bankrupt and they had to put all matches back in the deck. Game ends when I call time.
Students really enjoyed playing the games, many of these can be used at home to practice multiplication with your children. We will be moving on to double and triple digit multiplication before long, it is imperative that students know their basic facts.

Human Food Web

In science we are studying about the food web. Students have been learning about omnivores, carnivores, herbivores, producers and consumers, predator and prey, and the relationship amongst all of these in a food web.

Students were given yarn and a card with the name of a plant or animal (one person had the sun, because the food web could not exist without the sun). With the yarn they were to connect themselves with everything that they ate or that ate them. I asked questions regarding what classifications his/her plant or animal would fall under.
